What to Expect at Your First Guitar, Ukulele, or Bass Lesson

Are you (or your child) getting ready for your first music lesson? Whether you’re learning guitar, ukulele, or bass, that first session is exciting—but it can also come with a few nerves. As a professional music teacher in Orange County, I’ve helped many beginners take their first step.

Let’s walk through exactly what you can expect at your first guitar, ukulele, or bass lesson—from what to bring to how the lesson will flow.

🎒 What Should You Bring to Your First Lesson?

Here’s a simple checklist to get started:

  • ✅ Your instrument (guitar, ukulele, or bass)
  • ✅ A notebook or lesson journal
  • ✅ A folder for handouts or music sheets
  • ✅ A positive attitude and willingness to learn!

Don’t have your own instrument yet? Not a problem! At the music studio, I have loaner instruments available for first-time students to use in class as well as provide a beginners workbook and binder for the first lessons.

🎸 What Happens During the Lesson?

Your first music lesson is all about getting comfortable and setting a strong foundation. Here’s a typical structure for a 30- or 45-minute lesson:

1. Introductions & Goal Setting

We’ll talk briefly about your goals—do you want to strum campfire songs, play in a band, or just have fun with music? This helps me tailor future lessons to your interests.

2. Instrument Basics

You’ll learn:

  • How to hold the guitar, ukulele, or bass properly
  • Names of the strings
  • How to tune your instrument

3. Playing Your First Notes or Chords

Most beginners leave their first lesson being able to play a few basic notes! This instant success keeps things fun and encouraging.

🎶 What If You Have No Musical Experience?

No experience? That’s fine. In fact, most students I work with are complete beginners when they start. I’ll guide you step-by-step—no pressure, no judgment.

My goal is to make music accessible, fun, and approachable for students of all ages.

For Kids: What Parents Should Know

For younger students, especially those taking ukulele or guitar lessons, I make the lessons engaging and age-appropriate. Parents are welcome to sit in on the first lesson. I also provide tips for practicing at home.

Why Choose In-person Lessons in Orange County?

In-person music lessons offer key advantages:

  • Immediate feedback from a trained teacher
  • Personalized instruction tailored to your learning speed
  • The option to take private lessons or recitals down the road

If you live in Brea, Fullerton, Placentia, Yorba Linda, Anaheim, or anywhere in Orange County, you’re close to an experienced music instructor that offers guitar, ukulele, and bass lessons for all ages.

🎵 What Happens After the First Lesson?

After your first session, you’ll leave with:

  • A practice plan
  • A few things to work on before your next lesson
  • A clear sense of progress and what to expect next

And most importantly, you’ll leave with excitement to keep learning!
